Being shy is something many teenagers have to deal with and I understand how hard it can be to get over the fear of awkwardness and let someone else into your life. First off, you have to build your self-esteem because being dependent on family or friends can have extremely negative outcomes such as a low self-esteem which obviously worsens the situation. I admire your attitude in trying to stay positive which is the best thing to do, but I understand that sometimes it's just too much to bear. Friends and best friends are a vital part of a teenager or anyone's life. So stay as tight as you can with your friends, no matter how far they are but at the same time, work on making new friends. By the way, the fact that you are ready to start off your new school year with a positive attitude will get you far I promise.

Now onto the hard part, teenagers (myself included. I'm going into grade 11 this year) are into music (songs, artists) and sports but most of all they are also looking for nice people that they know they can rely on. You are not alone in wanting someone to lift your spirits when you are depressed, so you are bound to fall on someone who has many things in common with you. Figure out things that interest you and when the topic comes up, then try to state your opinion on it. Or if there is a social (a dance) then ask around to who is going. Also, Facebook and MSN are great ways to get past the awkward stage. If you add someone that you just met on Facebook then you can continue to chat with them until you find something in common and are able to speak to them in person... usually that only takes one night. In addition, someone is bound to come ask you what school you are from so don't be shy to tell them where you moved from and so on, they will enjoy your openness and respond to it positively.

Well I hope this helps, if you ever need someone to talk to you can e-mail me at aybar21@yahoo.com

Try to see if you can get a part time job. This will really help you in social skills. Try and see if your parents can get you into a martial art or some sort of activity that will allow you to communicate with each other. That way, when you talk to others, you can talk them about the subject you are doing. Stay positive in life. I was just like you. I had a very low self-esteem. Sometimes I still do. But you have to understand, with confidence, you can do unlimited things. Believe it.

I do not know if this will help but here are a dozen conversation starters.

Why where you given your name?
What is your least favorite Holiday?
What do you think is beyond the stars?
If you had a ton of money how would it corrupt you?
When was the last time you went barefoot in public?
When in your life did you say "no" even though you really wanted to say "yes"?
If you were going to go into business for yourself what would you do?
Where do you believe you where before you were born?
What song typifies the 80's?
What is your favorite Disney Movie?
If you could repeal one law what would if be?
Do you have any hidden talents?
What was the first book that made you cry?

I hope this helps. I took all questions from http://www.gettoknowu.com/all/AllQuestions_09.php they have hundreds of them.
