I know what you’re going through. That happened to me at the beginning of college. When you’re in class and a guy near you makes a joke or a side comment, laugh or comment back and that will make it easier to approach him. You’ll make friends easily that way!

change your whole lifestyle, listen to more outgoing music. take anychance you get, like if you see a small group of people you wouldnt mind making friends with, just walk up to them and say hey, im gonna hang with you guys. most people will hang.

You’ll have to start over. Consider yourself "the new kid" and start talking to people a little at a time the way you would if nobody knows you. (If people are pissed at you for ignoring them while you were infatuated with that girl, they’ll get over it, especially if you start to act like a friend again, and admit you were really crazy while you were going out with her.)
Now, one of the best ways to start talking to people again is to do it in a practical way. At school, ask somebody in the same class if they heard the teacher say what chapter you were supposed to read, or how many pages the paper was supposed to be. You’ve got to build relationships bit by bit.
The great thing about that is you don’t have to do anything big. You already did the screwing up. Anybody you chat with now is a plus. If you don’t get any new friends, well, at least you got some practice in for your next phase of life – college, work, whatever.

It’s ashame you became so caught up with this girl that you lost your friends and now are feeling so shy. What are your interests? Do you like music, sports, movies?
If you’d like, you can check out my article. I wrote a few tips on how to overcome shyness.
Hopefully some tips can help you so that you don’t have to feel so alone. Life is too short, you could be having fun!
